Figure of Speech: Pun: শ্লেষ বা দ্ব্যর্থক শব্দ প্রয়োগ

A pun is a play on words that produces a humorous effect by using a word that suggests two or more meanings, or by exploiting similar sounding words that have different meanings.

It is a figure of speech which involves a play on a word with two or more meanings. যখন একটা শব্দকে বিচক্ষণতার সঙ্গে একাধিক অর্থে ব্যবহার করা হয় তখন তাকে pun বলে। যেমন:

If a woman loses her husband, she pines for a second.

[(i) সেকেন্ড; সময়ের একক (ii) দ্বিতীয় স্বামী]

Pun-এর ব্যবহার বুদ্ধিদীপ্তভাবে হাসির উদ্রেক করে। কোন নারী যদি তার স্বামীকে হারায় তবে, ১ম অর্থঃ সে Pine বা আকুলভাবে ২য় স্বামীর জন্যে আকাঙ্ক্ষা করে। ২য় অর্থ আকাঙ্ক্ষা বা শোক করে ক্ষুদ্র সময়ের (for a second) জন্যে শোক (pines) করে।

It is easier for him to follow a hound than to follow an argument.

এখানে ১ম বাক্যে 'lies’ শব্দটার দু’টো অর্থ করা যায়: মিথ্যা বলা এবং বসবাস করা।

দ্বিতীয় বাক্যে, ১ম follow কে ধাওয়া করা অর্থে এবং ২য় follow কে বুঝতে পারা অর্থে ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে। সুতরাং দুটোই pun এর উদাহরণ। Pun-এ অনেক সময় ভিন্ন বানানের কিন্তু একই উচ্চারণের দুটি শব্দকে ভিন্ন অর্থে ব্যবহার করা হয়। যেমন:

They went and told the sexton, and

The sexton tolled the bell.

এখানে ‘told’ কে reported অর্থে এবং ‘tolled' কে sounded অর্থে ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে।

এখানে pun এর আরো কয়েকটা example দেয়া হল:

. He whipped his son to make him smart.

. [(i) active, (ii) suffer from pain]]

It is no mean (small) happiness to follow the golden mean (the middle path).
