Definition and Examples of Lyric poem – Literary terms

Lyric Poem:

A usually short, personal poem expressing the poet's emotions and thoughts rather than telling a story. The lyric, a broadly inclusive type of POETRY, is represented by such forms as the ELEGY, ODE, BALLAD, and SONNET. A strict definition of the lyric is not possible. However, its distinguishing characteristics are emotion, SUBJECTIVITY, melodiousness, IMAGINATION, DESCRIPTION, and (sometimes) meditation. In ancient Greece, a lyric was a poem to be sung with the accompaniment of a lyre. The following poem by Alice Walker is a modern lyric:

New Face

I have learned not to worry about love;

but to honor its coming

with all my heart.

To examine the dark mysteries

of the blood

with headless heed and

swirl,

to know the rush of feelings

swift and flowing

as water.

The source appears to be

some inexhaustible

spring

within our twin and triple selves;

The new face I turn up

to you no one else on earth

has ever

seen.
